The Jordan Atomic Energy Commission (JAEC) and the Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom on 9 December signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to investigate the possible use of small modular reactors (SMRs). JAEC Chairman Khaled Touqan said the memorandum is part of Jordan’s efforts to exploit SMRs as a key element in its nuclear strategy for electricity generation and water desalination, as well as for other thermal and industrial applications.
He said it will also enhance nuclear cooperation between the two countries.
JAEC Vice Chairman Kamal Araj said the memorandum comes under national plans to review global designs in the field of small reactors technology, and to choose the best designs for technical and financial feasibility studies for possible development in Jordan.
In November UK-based Rolls-Royce and US-based X-energy both signed similar MOUs with JAEC.
