The UK government has completed its GBP50 million (EUR 56 million) sale of UKAEA Ltd to engineering company Babcock International. UKAEA Ltd operates four UK nuclear sites: Dounreay, Harwell, Winfrith and Windscale. The company provides nuclear decommissioning, waste management and site environmental remediation services in the UK and overseas. It also manages the administration of a number of nuclear industry pension schemes.
At Dounreay, the change brings to an end the UK Atomic Energy Authority’s presence after 55 years and completes the privatisation of its entire workforce at the site. Dounreay Site Restoration Ltd evolved in 2008 from the old Dounreay Division of the UK Atomic Energy Authority as part of a commercial restructure. The reorganisation resulted in a group of new companies under the ownership of UKAEA Ltd.
Senior management positions in DSRL continue to be filled by secondees from UKAEA Ltd, supported by colleagues from business partners AMEC and CH2MHILL.
The change clears the way for competition for ownership of DSRL and its contract with the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority to manage the site clean-up and closure.
The site is owned by the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority.
