Alstom has opened a new $300 million production facility in Tennessee to supply steam turbines, gas turbines, large turbo-generators and related equipment for the North American fossil fuel and nuclear power generation market. The factory, which will create 350 jobs, will also be used to retrofit existing steam turbines.
An expansion of Alstom’s Cattanooga facility, the factory is centrally located in the USA, with good access to road, rail and waterways and an on-site barge dock with a lifting capacity of up to 1000 tons.
President of Alstom Power, Philippe Joubert said: “Our new Chattanooga factory dramatically enhances Alstom’s ability to build and retrofit power generation equipment for customers in North America and beyond.
“Coupled with Alstom’s recent investments in carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) and wind turbine production in the US, this unit represents another important step in executing our clean power strategy.”
Alstom already operates turbine manufacturing facilities in France, Germany, Switzerland and China. In May it announced plans to build a wind power assembly facility in Amarillo, Texas.
Meanwhile, it has been reported in Indian daily, The Hindu, that Alstom is close a deal to form a three-way joint venture with Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd and Indian firm BHEL. Alstom is expected to take a 33% share in the venture, which is expected to be responsible for the conventional island portion of upcoming nuclear projects. Senior vice president of Thermal Products Guy Chardon told the paper that the venture company is “expected to take off soon”.
