TVEL has completed the decommissioning of a fuel plant for the production of uranium dioxide powder. The land will soon be returned to green field status, and become available for industrial or social use.
As Russia’s first completed decommissioning project at an industrial production facility, the decommissioning took four years and cost some RUR656 million ($21 million). Funding came from Rosatom and the federal budget.
Executive Director of the Directorate of nuclear, radiological, industrial safety and environmental at TVEL Sergei Svinarenko said that the regulator Rostekhnadzor would soon be sent the documents required to remove the site from regulatory oversight. The area does not pose any danger and can be used for industrial or social needs.
TVEL says that the experience gained will be used for other facilities it owns, which are scheduled for decontamination work, conservation, and bring to a safe storage condition by 2020.
Head of Project Office at Rosatom, Evgeny Kudryavtsev said:” We have full confidence that all work carried out successfully. The experience gained will be used in the nuclear industry in the future.”
