Finland-based engine and genset manufacturer Wärtsilä has returned to the civil nuclear power business, spokeswoman Tuula Franck confirmed.
“We were the earliest in applied emergency power for nuclear power plants, and then the market went down,” she said. “Lately things have picked up, and we are increasing our remit to offer solutions for emergency power.”
Although she would not go into any details about products, the company currently supplies a range of heavy fuel oil and natural gas-powered engines plus generators for conventional power plants. Its biggest power plant genset is the W20V46 HFO engine, which generates up to 22,000kW at 60Hz from heavy fuel oil, light fuel oil or natural gas.
