Toshiba Corporation has announced the shipment of the condenser for the Vogtle 3 AP1000 nuclear power plant, currently being built in Georgia. This is Toshiba’s first shipment of a major component for a new generation of nuclear plants under construction in the US.
The condenser is a key component that condenses the steam used to drive the turbines and generators back into water. Toshiba designed the condenser for Vogtle 3, which was manufactured by a Korean engineering company, BHI Co., Ltd.
The condenser shipped from BHI’s manufacturing plant in Sacheon, Korea on 14 November 2011. Toshiba says it will leave the Port of Masan, about 300km southeast of Seoul in early December, destined for the Port of Savannah, Georgia.
Site preparation and limited construction on Vogtle units 3 and 4 began in 2009. The project received a Final Safety Evaluation Report from the NRC’s technical staff for the Combined Construction and Operating License in August 2011. Vogtle unit 3 is scheduled to start operation in 2016 as the first AP1000 in the US.
