European Union ministers are likely to approve a research agreement between the EU and Canada which will lead to sharing of nuclear facilities and sharing of information and data. The agreement has the approval of the Canadian government and the European Commission.
Areas of co-operation are likely to include nuclear safeguards, waste management, decommissioning, radiation protection and monitoring and safety.
According to the draft agreement, the aims of the agreement are to “strengthen cooperation in the peaceful, non-explosive, non-military uses of nuclear research and encourage the application of the results”.
Specific actions are likely to include participation of government units, universities and research institutes in projects which one partner is already developing, as well as agreements on the establishment of bilateral projects. Increased sharing of research facilities and resources, as well as visits and exchanges of scientists and engineers, is also likely.
