On 21 January, the Pacific Swan left the port of Cherbourg with the third shipment of vitrified high level waste (HLW) bound for Japan. The shipment consists of 60 canisters of waste each containing 490 kg of HLW encased in stainless steel. For the first time the shipment will go via the Panama Canal.

The ship will carry three casks (type TN28VT) each holding 20 canisters. Tokyo Electric and Kansai Electric each own 20 canisters and Chubu Electric and Kyushu Electric 10 canisters each. The waste will be delivered to the Rokkasho Mura interim storage facility.
