By June, West Valley Nuclear Services Co says it will have solidified 90% of the liquid high level waste remaining at the West Valley, New York, site, where the former Nuclear Fuels Service Co operated a reprocessing plant. About 600 000 gallons of HLW had been stored in underground vaults at the 200-acre site. To date, the company has glassifed the waste into 177 stainless steel canisters. By the time the work is completed, the company expects to have filled an estimated 240 to 260 canisters. The canisters would likely be shipped to the DOE’s Savannah River site until a permanent US repository is ready to receive them.
