Regulatory approval has been granted for the testing of BNFL’s new ‘Magrox’ ceramic fuel for Magnox reactors. The fuel will be tested at Calder Hall 1, which has been in operation for over 40 years.

If the Magrox fuel is successful, it should ensure longer operating lives for Magnox reactors at Wylfa and Oldbury, which would otherwise have to shut when BNFL’s magnox reprocessing plant, B205, closes in 2012.
