Tepco has said that it will begin a technical investigation into the proposed siting of a spent fuel interim storage facility in Aomori prefecture. The feasibility study follows an invitation from the city of Mutsu in Aomori. The company says that the facility could be operating in 2010.
On-site storage at some sites in Japan is filling up and the volume of spent fuel nationwide is already beyond the capacity of the Rokkasho reprocessing plant.
