The Finnish Supreme Court has rejected an objection to plans for the country’s fifth nuclear unit. A resident had claimed the Eurajoki local municipality had supported the application by TVO based on inadequate information.
In November 2000, TVO had applied for a government “decision in principle” on whether to allow construction of a new nuclear unit. The site for the new reactor would either be at Eurajoki, near TVO’s Olkiluoto plant, or near Fortum’s Loviisa plant. Both municipalities have agreed to the plan.
A government decision on the new reactor is expected soon, which would then have to be ratified by parliament.
Loviisa and Olkiluoto achieved a record generating total of 22.2TWh last year. The two plants also maintained the country’s 30% nuclear share of total electricity production.
