The Nuclear Power Company of India Limited (NPCIL) has identified two potential sites for new power plants. Chairman Chaturvedi said that two sites, one in Madhya Pradesh and one in Maharashtra had been identified for a nuclear generation complex. He said that a site like Rajapur in Maharashtra can have four units of 580MWe capacity each, and that such plants could be commissioned five years after permission was given to proceed.
When asked whether such plants would be based on Russian VVERs as now starting in Kudankulam, officials at NPCIL said that this was possible, but equipment could come from any provider. They said that, for example, EdF was interested in supplying equipment to India.
