Bulgarian energy minister Milko Kovachev said the shutdown of the two VVER-440s would not affect the country’s “energy balance” or electricity exports. Closure of the units before 2003 was one of the conditions agreed with the European Commission during accession negotiations.
Meanwhile, the cabinet has revoked the order to suspend construction of the Belene plant. A report into nuclear safety, environmental protection, radwaste management and the socio-economic importance of the plant is expected to be completed within six months. After considering this report, ministers will decide on whether to resume the project.
