India India says it will invest $50 million over the next five years in an international research programme that focuses on the development of accelerated driven systems (ADS) to generate electricity and to limit the life span of radioactive waste.
The project will be led by Shyam Sunder Kapoor of the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre in Mumbai. The chairman of the Indian Atomic Energy Commission, Anil Kakodkar, said India’s investment in the project will focus on research into the accelerator and neutron source. The USA has to date invested $281 million on a six-year waste transmutation programme, while Europe and Japan have investments of a similar size in the project.
Officials say the project could begin as early as 2003, and will take approximately six years.
