The press should have been notified about a leak of 132 gallons of coolant in a Korean reactor, representative Kim Hee-sun of Korea’s Millenium Democratic Party announced on 18 September. The parliamentarian said the leak, which took place on 5 April, should have been the subject of an alert within 30 minutes and employees should have been evacuated. Another representative, Lee Jong-kul, alleged that the alert had not been issued because it was not long before the finals of the soccer World Cup, which began on 31 May. He said the authorities did not issue a report so the situation would not escalate.
The representatives called for new measures to protect residents close to nuclear plants.
