Unit 2 of the Madras Atomic Power Station (MAPS) is back in service, after a year and a half off line.
The unit began an outage on 9 January 2002 for replacement of coolant tubes. The original Zircalloy 2 tubes were replaced with improved materials made of zirconium/2.5% niobium. The heat exchangers in the steam generators were also replaced and the plant systems upgraded, according to a statement by the Nuclear Power Corporation of India.
The modifications bring the unit’s capacity up 50MWe to 220MWe.
