A report by the Ministry of Science and Technology of South Korea sets out the government agenda to develop the country’s nuclear industry into one of the top five in the world by 2011.
The report outlines the third national nuclear development plan for 2007 — 2011 that will see the construction of the advanced pressurised water reactor the Korean Advanced Power Reactor 1400. This 1400MWe design is derived from the current Korean Standard Nuclear Power Plant.
In addition, the government also plans to emphasise production of fuel for the nation’s light water reactor.
The country already has 20 operational nuclear reactors and one experimental unit producing around 40% of electricity demand.
