Australia’s federal government has taken steps to quash any state-backed challenges to the proposed low-level nuclear waste site to be established in the Northern Territory.
Under proposed legislation, the government will overturn a Northern Territory law specifically introduced to void the waste site plan, set for one of three locations in the territory.
The bill would also block challenges under the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Heritage Protection Act and the Environmental Protection and Biodioversity Conservation Act and allow the federal government to overcome any measures aimed at restricting transport of radioactive waste to the site.
The Commonwealth Radioactive Waste Management Bill 2005 and the Commonwealth Radioactive Waste Management (Related Amendment) Bill 2005 is designed to put beyond doubt federal powers to establish the waste site.
