The European Commission has formally threatened legal action against Denmark, France, Portugal and Sweden for failing to install continuous safety controls required by a European Union (EU) directive on ‘the control of high-activity sealed radioactive sources and orphan sources’.
Brussels alleges the Danes have implemented only some of the necessary protective rules, while the French, Portuguese and Swedes have done nothing. All four have two months to show how they will implement the directive or face a possible referral to the European Court of Justice. The law orders that every high-activity sealed radioactive source be constantly controlled to improve traceability and worker protection.
