The UK’s Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has published a report on its investigation into a leak of radioactive liquid within the Thermal Oxide Reprocessing Plant (Thorp) facility, part of the Sellafield nuclear reprocessing plant in Cumbria. The investigation, carried out by HSE’s Nuclear Installations Inspectorate (NII), culminated in a prosecution of British Nuclear Group Sellafield and fines of £500,000 ($1 million) plus costs of over £67,000 ($130,000).

The report outlines 55 recommendations and actions arising from the investigation and discusses lessons for BNGS and the wider nuclear industry.
