In the midst of a massive nuclear development programme, China is set on relying almost wholly on self- developed nuclear power technology by 2020, recent comments from a leading academic suggest.
According to local media, Ouyang Yu, an academic of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said that the country will commission its first self-developed pressurised water reactor by 2017 based on technology transfer from Westinghouse, which is building four reactors in China.
“It will take a few years for China to absorb the technology and the nation is keen to come up with its own design for the third-generation nuclear facilities,” Ouyang reportedly said adding that the nation’s own uranium ore supply could meet its demands by 2020.
