GE Energy’s nuclear business has completed the first US application of its patented platinum injection process to mitigate intergranular stress corrosion cracking in boiling water reactor (BWR) plants.
The reference project was performed at the Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station’s Unit 1 in central New York, a two-unit BWR generating a total of 1,757 MW.
The On-line NobleChem (OLNC) system is designed to reduce the length of some maintenance outages while still protecting reactor internals.
Previously BWR utilities have taken measures to mitigate stress corrosion of reactor internals and piping by depositing noble metals, both platinum and rhodium, on surfaces at the start of a refuelling outage. The is performed while the reactor is still operating at full power.
While this was the first US application of GE’s OLNC, the process was successfully implemented in 2005, 2006 and 2007 at a European nuclear power plant.
