Alabama-based Southern Co has announced that it intends to sell its 500 MW share in the proposed William States Lee III nuclear power project in Cherokee County, South Carolina to Duke Energy.
In a statement Southern said it remains fully committed to nuclear development, including its focus on the proposed new units at Vogtle near Waynesboro, Georgia for which the firm has applied for an early site permit for two new nuclear units.
“Energy needs are steadily increasing in the Southeast, and we intend to be on the forefront of exploring nuclear energy as an option to meet the rising demand for electricity,” said Barnie Beasley, president and chief executive of Southern Nuclear.
