A critical step has been made towards negotiating the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for Unistar’s Calvert Cliffs 3.
Areva and consortium partner Bechtel Power Corporation have signed an agreement with UniStar Nuclear Energy outlining the terms and conditions for an EPC contract for Calvert Cliffs 3.
“This is a major milestone that continues the momentum toward realizing the first EPR nuclear energy facility to be built in the United States and acknowledges the quality of Areva’s offering,” said Mike Rencheck, president of Areva NP Inc.
The EPC contract for Calvert Cliffs 3 is planned to be the first in a series of standardized EPC contracts for a fleet of US EPR facilities that will be licensed, developed and constructed as part of UniStar’s business model.
As well as Calvert Cliffs 3 in Maryland, Unistar plans to build EPR units Bell Bend near Susquehanna in Pennsylvania and Nine Mile Point 3 in New York. It was planning to build a second EPR at the Callaway site in Missouri with AmerenUE, but in June AmerenUE asked the NRC to suspend its review of the combined operating licence application for the plant due to difficulties financing the project.
