The law on the construction and operation of Turkey’s first NPP, to be built by Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom in the town of Akkuyu in Mersin, came into force on 17 August after it had been published in the Official Gazette. The Turkish parliament adopted the bill on 15 July, after Turkey and the Russian Federation signed an agreement in Ankara on the construction of the plant in May 2010. Under the agreement, Turkey and Russia will cooperate in construction and operation of the NPP. Rosatom, and the Turkish Energy and Natural Resources Ministry are parties to the agreement. A project company, Akkuyu NPP, has been set up in which Russian authorized institutions will have an at least 51% share. The 4,800MWe plant is expected to provide 14% of Turkey's power generation.
