Ukraine plans to switch 40% of its NPPs to using fuel supplied by US-Japanese company Westinghouse, Ukraine Energy and Coal Industry Minister Ihor Nasalyk told parliament on 20 October. "We are operating the fifth generating set at the Zaporozhye NPP completely on the fuel from the Westinghouse company. A programme is being considered according to which 40% of nuclear generating sets will use fuel from Westinghouse. We have diversified our capabilities by 40%," he said.
In the first six months of 2016, Ukrainian nuclear utility Energoatom imported 41.6% of nuclear fuel elements from Westinghouse’s Swedish facility and the remaining 58.% from Russia. From January to August 2016 Ukraine purchased nuclear fuel totalling $324.879m, according to the State Statistics Service. This included Russian-made fuel worth $224.288m and Swedish fuel worth $100.591m. In September nuclear fuel worth $77.32m was bought, including $43.79m from Russia and $33.531m from Sweden. In 2015 Ukraine purchased fuel totalling $643.57m, $610.883m of which was from Russia snd $32.688m from Sweden.
