More than 30GWe of nuclear energy facilities will be under construction in China during the next five years with installed capacity of 58GWe by 2020, an increase of 16.5%, according to plans laid out in the 13th Five-Year Plan for energy development, issued by the National Development and Reform Commission and the National Energy Administration, the China Securities Journal reported on 17 January.
For the targets to be reached China will have to build 7-10 reactors a year. China has 37 reactors in commercial operation, 20 under construction and four that have been approved. Its nuclear share of energy generation was 3.03% in 2015, with a target of 6% by 2020 and 9% by 2030.
