Amazon Filters Ltd, a F4N (Fit For Nuclear) approved manufacturer of Nuclear filtration products, has received a significant order from Magnox – the management and operations contractor responsible for 12 nuclear sites and one hydroelectric plant in the UK.

The order was for the manufacture of vent filter assemblies to be used on nuclear waste storage containers used to isolate radioactive waste until it is safe for disposal. To make these nuclear waste storage containers suitable for use, it is necessary to fit a vent filter assembly to prevent any pressure build-up of flammable gases in the package

Magnox said it had procured some variants of Ductile Cast Iron Containers from Gesellschaft Für Nuklear-Service (GNS) for which vent assemblies were required to make them suitable for use. The vent assemblies were needed to prevent any pressure build-up in the package and to ensure the diffusion of flammable gases, typically hydrogen and methane, from the container, and to eliminate the passage of any contaminated dust. The vent had to ensure adequate dispersal of flammable gases during storage in the interim.

Fit For Nuclear (F4N), developed by the Nuclear AMRC, is a service to help UK manufacturing companies prepare bids for work in the civil nuclear supply chain. F4N enables companies to measure their operations against the standards required to supply the nuclear industry in new build, operations and decommissioning. Nuclear new build developers and the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority use F4N to identify potential companies for their supply chains. Some 600 companies have already completed the online F4N assessment, with most receiving ongoing support and development. F4N is designed for businesses with 10 or more employees or with a turnover of at least GBP1.6m ($2m).
