Finnish utility Fortum has won a contract from Preussen Elektra GmbH to supply a NURES technology-based purification system for radioactive liquids and a boron removal system to Germany’s Grafenrheinfeld NPP.
The first phase comprises the design of a plant-customised system for PreussenElektra’s Grafenrheinfeld plant while the second phase consists of the building the system and the purification process and finally removing it. Fortum said a successful pilot was carried out at the plant using its technology at the bidding stage, which resulted in "pure boron, water, and a very small amount of waste for final disposal".
The company said its ion exchange materials have been used, among other things, to clean the radioactive waters of Japan's Fukushima Daiichi plant.
