A 500-member jury was set up in South Korea on 11 September to discuss President Moon Jae-in's proposal to scrap the construction of units 5 and 6 at the Shin Kori NPP in the southeastern city of Ulsan to reduce dependence on nuclear energy, officials said. Members were selected from a pool of 5,981 people who expressed willingness to take part in the process. They were among a total of 20,000 respondents in an initial survey conducted to select the jury.
After spending a month familiarizing themselves with the project, they will spend three days together in a camp for final debates from 13-15 October. Three surveys will be conducted on the jury before, during and at the end of the camp. The commission will announce its recommendation on 20 October.
Ending the project was one of Moon's campaign promises. But he said he would first consult public opinion. South Korea relies on nuclear power for about a third of its electricity.
