Russia and Cambodia have signed an intergovernmental agreement to cooperate in the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
The agreement was signed, 19 September, on the sidelines of the IAEA General Conference by Nikolay Spassky, deputy director general of Russian State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom and Tekreth Samrach, Secretary of State and Vice Chairman of the National Council for Sustainable Development (NSCD) of the Kingdom of Cambodia.
The agreement establishes a legal basis for the further development of bilateral cooperation between Russia and Cambodia in nuclear education and training, research, and the use of irradiation technologies in manufacturing, medicine, agriculture, and environmental protection.
For Cambodia, the document opens up prospects for "large-scale strategic projects" in nuclear power. The parties will now establish a coordinating committee to follow up the implementation of the agreement.
Rosatom and Cambodia's NCSD have previously (May 2016) signed memoranda of understanding to establish an Information Centre for Atomic Energy in Cambodia and a joint working group on the peaceful use of atomic energy.
