Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom and the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) on 5 September signed an agreement on interaction and cooperation in the construction of small modular reactors (SMRs) based on the latest RITM-200 reactor facility, originally designed for ships.

The parties agreed on cooperation on the preparation of a feasibility study, design and survey work, development of a financial model for the project and the determination of the site for their deployment in Yakutia.

Rosatom is ready to offer partners a project for a ground-based nuclear-powered nuclear-magnetic resonator with a RITM-200 reactor. A nuclear power plant of this type is designed to supply energy to isolated or remote areas and consumers.

The RITM-200 is a new generation pressurised water. Six reactors of this series have been successfully installed on the icebreakers “Arktika”, “Sibir” and “Ural”.

Russia is also developing a raft of other small modular reactor designs.
