On 7 December in Moscow, Rosatom’s Deputy Director General for International Cooperation, Nikolay Spasskiy, and Nicaragua’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Russia, Alba Azucena Torres, signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on cooperation in the field of use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.
The signature followed a meeting between Spasskiy and a Nicaraaguan delegation including Minister of Finance and National Debt and Co-Chair of the Intergovernmental Russian-Nicaraguan Commission on trade, economic, scientific and technical cooperation Ivаn Acosta, Special Representative of the Nicaraguan President for Relations with Russia Laureano Ortega and Presidential Representative Rafael Ortega.
The MOU, the first such document between Russia and Nicaragua, details a wide range of areas, in particular, raising public awareness about nuclear technologies, the development of Nicaragua’s nuclear infrastructure, and non-energy applications of nuclear energy in industry, agriculture and medicine. As soon as the pandemic situation allows, the parties will organise in-person consultations its implementation.
