A Memorandum of Cooperation has been signed between Rosatom and the Kyrgyz Ministry of Health in the field of non-energy use of nuclear technologies in healthcare. The parties agreed to jointly develop high-tech medical projects in Kyrgyzstan. This includes the establishment at the National Centre for Oncology & Haematology of a radiopharmaceutical pharmacy and a centre for molecular visualisation, where advanced methods for diagnosing and treating cancer and other diseases will be used.
Cooperation is already underway on technological equipment and commissioning of a single-photon emission computed tomography department created as part of an International Atomic Energy Agency technical cooperation programme. Russian experts are assisting their Kyrgyz colleagues in preparing the necessary permits.
“We are pleased to have the opportunity, together with Kyrgyz partners, to develop innovative technologies that make a significant contribution to improving the quality of life of people in our countries. Our work in this area includes the production of radiopharmaceuticals, the supply of high-tech medical equipment, the creation of new medical infrastructure and training,” said Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev.
In a meeting with the Chairman of the Kyrgyzstan Cabinet of Ministers, Akylbek Zhaparov,on the sidelines of the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council and the Council of Heads of Government of the CIS, Likhachev also discussed whole range of issues of bilateral cooperation. These included the reclamation of uranium tailings and low-power NPPs as well as nuclear medicine.
Likhachev and Zhaparov noted with satisfaction the progress in implementation of the priority project of bilateral cooperation – the Interstate Target Programme “Reclamation of objects of former uranium mining industries” being implemented under the auspices of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). The importance of continuing reclamation activities in Kyrgyzstan was emphasised.
Likhachev also reported to Zhaparov on the progress in development of a project for the construction of a low-power NPP in Kyrgyzstan and it was agreed to continue consultations in this area.
