Artificial intelligence (AI) will help reduce the design time of a NPP from five years to several months, according to Ekaterina Solntseva, Director for Digitalization at Rosatom. She told the Open Innovations 2024 forum: "The design of an NPP now takes approximately five years. Our task is to reduce it with the help of AI to several months. When can this be done? We believe that this is unlikely to be possible until 2030. But the 2030-2040 decade will be the period when, I believe, this will be achieved."

She said AI would be especially useful for designing large, complex items such as cars, aircraft and NPPs. However, since such calculations require gigantic amounts of power, it will not be possible without use of a quantum computer.

The forum, dedicated to the prospects of achieving technological sovereignty with the participation of Russian venture funds, was attended by First Deputy Prime Minister Andrei Belousov, Minister of Economic Development Maxim Reshetnikov along with representatives of Rosatom and Sberbank, Russian scientists, heads of small technological companies, investors and industrial partners. The organiser was the Skolkovo Foundation jointly with the Moscow government. The event was supported by the WEB.RF. General partners included Sberbank, Rosatom, Rostelecom and OJSC RZD (railway company).
