The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) announced that the Commissionhas decided to renew McMaster University’s operating licence for its McMaster Nuclear Reactor (MNR) for a 20-year period. CNSC says that, in making its decision, it considered written submissions from McMaster University, CNSC staff and 17 intervenors. After reviewing all submissions, the Commission concluded that McMaster University remains qualified to carry on the activities that the renewed licence will authorise.
McMaster Nuclear Operations & Facilities houses a unique suite of world-class nuclear research facilities anchored by the MNR built in the 1950s. MNR is Canada’s most powerful nuclear research reactor, which provides neutrons for medical isotope production and scientific research on clean energy, medicine, nuclear safety, materials science and more. It was the first university-based research reactor in the British Commonwealth.
