Engineering consultant AFRY has secured a design contract from MVM NUKA to upgrade the MVM Paks Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) in Hungary.

This project focuses on reconstructing control circuits as part of the plant’s lifetime extension programme. It aims to maintain safe and reliable operations at Hungary’s key energy facilities.

MVM NUKA is a Hungarian engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractor. The company is overseeing the project for MVM Paks Nuclear Power Plant, which is owned by Hungarian power company MVM Group.

Paks NPP is Hungary’s only nuclear plant. It is located 100km southwest of Budapest.

The facility has four 506MWe pressurised water reactors, which were brought online between 1982 and 1987. In 2023, the plant generated nearly half of Hungary’s electricity, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

The reconstruction project aims to enhance the reliable and efficient operation of the plant.

AFRY will be engaged in the detailed design of nearly 700 control circuits, covering instrumentation, control, and electrical systems, excluding reactor and turbine islands.

The work will adhere to the requirements, design specifications, and safety standards set by the IAEA, the Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority, and Paks Nuclear Power Plant.

AFRY Hungary managing director and nuclear head József Dénes said: “We are proud to continue our successful collaboration with MVM NUKA and MVM Paks NPP.

“This contract reinforces our ability to deliver complex and high-stakes projects in the nuclear sector, further solidifying our role in supporting the reliable and safe operation of Hungary’s energy infrastructure.”

Paks NPP provides 40% of Hungary’s electricity and supports CO2 reduction goals, supplying clean energy to roughly 1.5 million households.

AFRY’s involvement will help the nuclear power plant in a secure and efficient energy transition.

Last month, the engineering consultant announced its plans to support the decommissioning of Norwegian nuclear facilities in a new framework agreement. As part of this deal, AFRY will support the Norwegian Nuclear Decommissioning Agency (NND) with expertise in programme and project management services.
