US-based nuclear technology company TerraPower has entered a strategic collaboration with Sabey Data Centres (SDC), a developer, owner, and operator of data centres.
SDC is a large-scale private data centre provider, with more than two decades of experience in developing, constructing, and operating data centres across the US.
The two companies signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to leverage TerraPower’s advanced nuclear Natrium plants into SDC’s existing and future data centres.
The collaboration will explore new Natrium plants in the Rocky Mountain region, and Texas to support growing power needs for SDC-owned data centres.
It will explore multiple project execution structures using TerraPower’s advanced nuclear plus storage Natrium technology, to address the growing energy demand in data centres.
Sabey Data Centers president Tim Mirick said: “Sabey Data Centers is dedicated to pioneering sustainable energy solutions to support our customers’ growth.
“Our strategic collaboration with TerraPower represents a substantial move toward integrating clean, innovative power technologies into the heart of our operations.”
Sabey Data Centers vice chairman and National Real Estate Advisors president and CEO Jeffrey Kanne said: “This strategic relationship exemplifies the forward-thinking collaboration necessary to meet the evolving energy demands of our digital future.”
Natrium is an advanced nuclear reactor designed by TerraPower and GE-Hitachi technology and is supported by the US Department of Energy (DOE).
It features a 345MW sodium-cooled fast reactor and a patented molten salt-based customisable energy storage system, which can boost the output to 500MW when needed.
The energy storage system is designed to maintain a steady base output and can quickly ramp up the output when demand peaks.
Last year, TerraPower started construction on the first advanced Natrium plant in the US, near a retiring coal facility in Kemmerer, Wyoming.
The first Natrium plant is being developed under a public-private partnership with the US Department of Energy’s Advanced Reactor Demonstration Program (ARDP).
Earlier this year, the company awarded key contracts for the Reactor Enclosure System (RES) of its Natrium reactor, including ENSA, Doosan, HD Hyundai, and Marmen.
TerraPower president and CEO Chris Levesque said: “At its heart, TerraPower is an innovation-driven company, and we are thrilled to collaborate with Sabey to address the surging energy demands of data centres with clean, reliable and adaptable solutions like the Natrium technology.
“The energy sector is transforming at an unprecedented pace after decades of business as usual, and meaningful progress will require strategic collaboration across industries.
“Together, we can ensure advanced nuclear technology plays a vital role in securing a clean, resilient energy grid.”
