The University of Idaho (UI) and Idaho National Laboratory (INL) have signed a five-year Strategic Understanding for Premier Education & Research (SUPER) agreement to increase collaboration on nuclear energy research and development. The partnership aims to enhance the long-term viability of nuclear power, protect national security and build a resilient, low-carbon energy future for Idaho and the nation. Key areas include nuclear materials, fuel cycle engineering, nuclear-integrated energy systems, power systems and cybersecurity.
INL and UI also launched the Idaho’s first Energy Institute to tackle energy-related challenges. The institute will serve as a hub for research, education and practical problem-solving, aiming to increase energy literacy and prepare a workforce to transform the energy future.
UI and INL are part of the Idaho Advanced Energy Consortium, leading Intermountain West Nuclear Energy Corridor (INEC) development. This initiative is part of the Tech Hubs programme to fund regions identified for their high potential to become epicentres for globally competitive innovation. Initial funding of $500,000 and official US Economic Development Association designation opens the opportunity for up to $75m in additional federal funding to the state to carry out the nuclear energy tech hub’s mission.
