Strategic cooperation is to be launched between Hungary and the UK in the field of the nuclear industry. The aim is to make small modular reactors (SMRs) available for use in the energy supply as soon as possible, Hungary’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó said during a visit to London.

Following a meeting with UKForeign Minister David Lammy, Szijjártó said that their first official meeting had been held in a very good atmosphere despite differing views on certain geopolitical issues.

Szijjártó said that they had agreed to launch strategic cooperation in the nuclear industry, as both Hungary and the UK rely heavily on nuclear energy, and in recent years the two countries have stood by each other with mutual support for their nuclear developments. The nuclear industry is facing a major breakthrough, with serious research underway to build SMRs, he noted.

He then added that this would mean that small NPPs be built in a football field-sized area that could provide energy to a smaller town or a factory with an investment of one or two or three years, which could provide energy to a municipality or a larger plant on their own in an efficient and environmentally friendly way

Hungary is interested in technology because “we are a land-based country, to put it mildly, not rich in energy sources and thus, for us, nuclear energy is the real solution,” he explained. He noted that Rolls-Royce is one of the world’s leading companies in the sector.
