It categorised cases of resolving equipment obsolescence problems by type, and noted the cost of the work. A total of 28 different sources were included in the study, contributing 390 data points:

The report also added that many organisations were unable to provide the required data to assist in this study, because either their resolution cost data was not recorded or kept or most frequently, it was not readily available without extensive research. It recommends organisations set up obsolescence metrics that include at least number of obsolescence problems solved per year, number and percent of each type of resolution type used, and non-recurring engineering cost breakdown, and total costs for each resolution.
