AECL has signed a 12-month feasibility analysis of the plan to restart construction of Romania’s Cernavoda 3&4. The PHWRs were originally started in 1984 and 1985, but were never finished.
AECL CEO Hugh MacDiarmid said that the project would look to install two CANDU 6 reactors at the site, which currently consists of half-built containment structures and buildings.
MacDiarmid said that the decision to restart construction would be made after receiving the study, and other factors such as financing.
The decision to go forward will be made by project consortium EnergoNuclear S.A. That group consists of a 51% stakeholding by Romanian utility Nuclearelectrica. Other partners include Italy’s Enel, Germany’s RWE Power, Spain’s Iberdrola and steel producer ArcelorMittal. This grouping was established in March 2009. The consortium was reorganised in 2009 after investor GDF Suez pulled out of the initial grouping, formed in November 2008.
