A complex for desalination of sea water has begun operation at the site of the Akkuyu NPP under construction in Türkiye. It will provide a desalinated water station for household needs and fire safety systems.
The complex consists of two modules with a capacity of 1000 cubic metres a day. In special evaporator assemblies, seawater will become high-purity distillate from which super pure chemically desalinated water will be produced by evaporation and condensation. In the future, it will also be possible to obtain drinking quality water The complex is equipped with a special mineralisation unit, on which distillate can be saturated with mineral salts in full compliance with water treatment standards.
“We are gradually commissioning the infrastructure facilities of the first launch complex, which will operate throughout the life of the nuclear power plant,” said Sergei Butskikh, First Deputy General Director of project company Akkuyu Nukleer and Director of the Akkuyu NPP under construction. The start of the operation of the desalination complex is an important event to ensure uninterrupted water supply, which will support reliable operation of the station as a whole. This is also one of the advantages of nuclear energy. “After the launch, the nuclear power plant will provide itself with water using the generated. The desalination cycle is completely environmentally friendly. Water returned to the sea after use will comply with Turkish and international standards both in temperature and in chemical composition.”
