French firm Alstom has secured a EUR5.1 million ($6.8 million) contract to retrofit the generators at Paks Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) in central Hungary. The deal creates "a sound basis" for Alstom’s participation in further projects at the plant.
As part of the contract Alstom Hungary will service the eight operating generators across the four nuclear reactor at Paks, plus one spare generator.
Paks’ eight 500 MW Ganz generators were commissioned between 1982 and 1987 and have had regular services scheduled every 10-12 years for the planned 50-year lifetime of each block.
Alstom intends to service one generator each year from 2013 to 2021.
The work will be carried out at Alstom’s generator services in Budapest, utilizing the skills and expertise of both Hungarian and international engineer teams as well as several domestic subcontractors, the company said.
The 2000 MW Paks nuclear power plant provides around 40% of Hungary’s electricity.
