UK engineering group Amec has declared an interest in buying part or all of the British Nuclear Group (BNG), operators of the Sellafield reprocessing site in Cumbria.

The company has, together with US counterpart and sometime partner Fluor, expressed an interest in the group and has written to state-owned BNFL, owners of BNG, to propose dialogue.

An Amec spokesman reportedly said, “We are very keen to build a world class nuclear business.”

As part of its move into the nuclear business Amec recently paid £38 million ($69 million) for nuclear services and consultancy group NNC Holdings and is expanding rapidly with acquisitions in Canada, France and the USA.
