Areva has signed an agreement with EDF Energy to manufacture forgings for the first EPR reactor to be built at Hinkley point, South-West England. The accord is a key step towards the construction of the United Kingdom’s first two EPR reactors planned by EDF.

The Areva group is also in commercial discussions with Horizon Nuclear Power and NuGeneration for the supply of up to 6 additional EPR reactors in the United Kingdom.

The EPR reactor is currently undergoing the Generic Design Assessment process in the United Kingdom. British regulators have recently reiterated their confidence in Areva’s generation III+ reactor, which meets the highest safety standards. The EPR reactor is currently being built in Finland, France and China and the certification process is underway in the United States.

Areva CEO, Luc Oursel, said: “This agreement confirms the United Kingdom’s commitment to promote nuclear power, a sustainable, economically-viable and low-carbon energy source. It represents a milestone for Areva’s new build projects in the country.”
