ATG of Fremont, California has successfully started up a facility on the Hansford Reservation in Washington state to process and vitrify low level mixed waste (LLMW).
The company says LLMW from Hanford, consisting of granular activated carbon containing regulated chemical and radioactive constituents, was successfully treated and immobilised into high integrity glass material.
ATG will operate the facility initially to process LLMW at a maximum permit rate of 350 lb/h while it confirms the performance of the equipment.
Doreen Chiu, president and CEO of ATG, said start-up of the facility marks the successful administration of five years of co-operative efforts between the regulatory agencies, ATG, the DoE, and Fluor Hanford. “With the first comprehensive licensed facility we will play a key role in the treatment of DoE and commercial LLMW,” she said.
