The Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI), Australia’s largest and business organisation, has called for the Australian government to conduct a feasibility study into the establishment of nuclear power facilities in Australia and to re-open its recent energy white paper: Securing Australia’s Energy Future so as to canvass the possibility of nuclear power.
Nuclear energy is currently attracting increased interest across the globe, the ACCI said, primarily due to concerns about rising energy costs as well as greater sensitivity to the possible effect of greenhouse gas emissions on climate change. It argued that an energy source which provides baseload power while neither threatening economic growth nor contributing to greenhouse gas emissions should not be arbitrarily ruled out of consideration. The group said it is time to revisit the issue of domestic nuclear power.
