A Babcock and Balfour Beatty Joint venture company has been awarded the contract for the ‘early contractor engagement’ phase of the first box encapsulation store and Comprehensive Import Export Facility (CIEF) project by Sellafield Ltd.

The contract involves a two year initial early contractor engagement phase, to start almost immediately. The implementation phase, which commences in 2013, comprises the detailed design, procurement, construction and commissioning and is scheduled for completion in 2019. The total scheme value is estimated to be in excess of GBP 200 million.

BEPPS and CEIF project director John Parr, said: “This is an important project on the Sellafield site that requires the skills of a highly competent and experienced nuclear team. Together with Sellafield Ltd the local Cumbrian supply chain and the JV partners we are looking forward to delivering a world class project of which we can all be proud”

The BEPPS1 and CIEF project consists of the completion of a nuclear waste store and a new import/export facility to handle radioactive waste, arising from nuclear decommissioning operations at the Sellafield site in West Cumbria.

The award of the contract is an endorsement of the partnering approach and successful delivery from Babcock and Balfour Beatty on the Pile Fuel Storage Pond retrieval / sludge treatment and the SPP1 processing plant projects currently in construction at the Sellafield site.
